We’ve all heard the saying, “you are what you eat,” and there’s a lot of truth to it. The quality of our food impacts our health, our communities, and even the world around us. When it comes to honey, this is especially true. Honey has been a treasured food for thousands of years—a sweet gift from nature that bees craft with care. But not all honey is the same.
Let’s take a closer look at why local honey, like the delicious varieties from The Elmer Honey Co., is so special and why choosing it benefits your health, the environment, and your community here in the UK.
Supporting Local Businesses and Beekeepers
When you buy local honey, you’re not just getting a jar of something sweet—you’re making a real difference. Here’s how:
Unique Flavour from UK Flora: British bees collect nectar from wildflowers, gardens, and hedgerows, giving local honey its unique taste. Whether it’s the subtle sweetness of clover or the rich notes of heather honey, every jar captures the flavour of your local landscape.
You Support Your Community: Local businesses are the backbone of towns and villages across the UK. By choosing to buy from local beekeepers, you’re helping to keep these businesses thriving. That means more local jobs, a stronger economy, and a real sense of pride in what your community produces.
Beekeepers Look After Their Bees: Local beekeepers take great care of their hives, working hard to keep bees healthy and safe from pests or diseases like varroa mites. These efforts are crucial for keeping bee populations productive and thriving.
The Natural Goodness of Honey
Honey isn’t just a sweet treat—it’s a natural powerhouse that’s been used for centuries:
Natural Healing Properties: Honey has been used for generations to soothe sore throats, calm coughs, and even help with wound healing. Its natural antibacterial properties make it a versatile remedy to have on hand.
A Healthier Sweetener: Swap out processed sugar for honey, and you’ll be adding natural sweetness along with trace minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium.
Local Pollen for Allergy Relief: Some people believe that eating honey from their local area can help with hay fever by introducing tiny amounts of local pollen into the body. While this isn’t scientifically proven, many UK residents swear by it to ease seasonal allergies.
Supporting Bees and the British Countryside
Bees play a huge role in our food system and countryside. Without them, many plants wouldn’t get pollinated, and we’d see a big decline in crops and wildflowers. Choosing local honey helps support the hardworking beekeepers who keep these pollinators buzzing.
Boosting Biodiversity: Bees are essential for pollinating UK crops and wild plants. By supporting local beekeepers, you’re also helping to maintain the biodiversity of British hedgerows, meadows, and gardens.
Healthy Bee Populations: British beekeepers monitor their hives closely to keep their bees in good shape and protect them from threats like disease or habitat loss.
Reducing Food Miles: Imported honey often travels thousands of miles to reach UK shelves, contributing to pollution. Local honey, however, comes straight from beekeepers nearby, cutting down on transport emissions.
Strengthening Local Communities
When you buy local honey, your money stays within your community. It helps support small businesses, keeps local traditions alive, and creates connections between neighbours. Local beekeepers, like The Elmer Honey Co., are often at the heart of their communities—whether that’s through sharing knowledge at local events or working with other small, independent businesses.
Buying local doesn’t just taste good—it does good too.
Sweeten Your Day with Local Honey
There’s so much to love about local honey. It’s better for you, it supports the environment, and it gives back to your community. Whether you’re adding a spoonful to your tea, drizzling it over porridge, or simply spreading it on toast, every jar of local honey tells a story of care, hard work, and nature’s brilliance.
If you’re nearby, we’d love for you to try the honey from The Elmer Honey Co. It’s not just honey—it’s a little taste of the British countryside, made with care and dedication by our bees and beekeepers.
Support your local beekeepers. Taste the difference. Choose local honey today—your tastebuds, your community, and the bees will thank you!

Hi I was wondering if your honey is raw or pasteurised? I was just wondering as I am enjoying my first jar which was gifted to me by a friend.
Hi Allen
Our honey comes straight from the hive. We dont do anything to it other than filter it a little to get any big lumps out of it.
